16 32 1HP Drum Sander with rubberised feed belt & variable speed feed motor

  
6" - 32" 1HP Drum Sander with rubberised feed belt, variable speed feed motor and a thicknessing/height range of 1/32" to 3", on a heavy castored wooden trolley, used but in good condition and working perfectly. The sander is an early version of the Axmister ST-480 drum sander, with slightly less power and width capacity (406mm single pass rather than 490mm single pass width). It uses an induction motor for quiet running of the drum, with a separate speed-controlled motor to run the feed belt. The sanding gap between the drum and the feed belt can be adjusted to give even height across the gap. The feed belt can be adjusted so that it always runs straight and true under the drum. The machine uses 75/76mm wide sandpaper strips, which are cut by the user to a taper shape at either end so that the sandpaper strip can be wrapped around the drum. One end is secured by a small nut & bolt with a clasping plate, passing through the sandpaper and the drum. This prvents any chance of the drag of the workpiece being sanded loosening the sanding belt. The other end of the sanding strip is secured with a spring clip. Dust extraction is via a 50mm diameter round connector on top of the sanding drum cover. A right-angle connector and 6ft of hose are included, to connect the sander to a suitable dust extractor. (A dedicated small dust collector with fine filtration is recommended, rather than connection to a larger extractor).

The machine comes with a number of rolls of unused Hermes sandpaper of various grits, as well as some already-shaped part-used sanding strips. The latter can also be used as the template from which to cut and end-shape a new sanding strip from a roll of sandpaper.

Also included is a part-used rubber block employed to declog the sanding paper of dust; as well as two spare cog wheels for the belt motor and a user manual. The sander is bolted on to a large home-made wooden stand/trolley with four large rubber-wheeled & lockable castors, as well as various cubby holes to keep spare sandpaper, declogging block and any other bits and pieces. This stand puts the sander at the right working height and provides a very solid yet moveable base.

The sander has only ever been used to sand-to-size stringing, banding and thin parts for small boxes, rather than for sanding wide parts such as cupboard doors. As a result, it has never been uder much strain and still works very well and with great accuracy. A newly-shaped and unused 120 grit sanding strip has been wound and fixed on to the drum.
